There is increasing concern about potential outside influence involved in recent political demonstrations in Macedonia following reports that students were offered up to $1,500 by an activist group to come up with the best ideas on how to protest against the country's government.

The concern aboutย overseas hands being involved inย sparking protests inย the country has been heightened byย recent reports inย Macedonian media, which claimed that activist group, Canvas (Centre forย Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies), had sent outย a memo toย Macedonian students encouraging them toย come upย with effective protest ideas.

The leaked memo, sent three weeks beforeย last Sunday's mass demonstrations againstย Nikola Gruevski's government, purportedly shows Canvas offering students who could come upย with the best protest ideas forย a grant of $1,500.

Protestors forย Hire and Revolution Makers

The issue ofย Canvas being involved inย Macedonia is another matter ofย discontent amongย some withinย the country.

The Belgrade-based group was formed byย Slobodan Djinovicย andย Srdja Popovicย โ€” activists who were considered toย have played an instrumental role inย deposing former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic inย 2000.

Canvas' website describes the group as "a non-profit, non-governmental, international network, oriented toย educational work related toย strategic nonviolent conflict."

Meanwhile, Canvas' stated aim is to "spread the word of 'people power' toย the world" and to "explain [โ€ฆ] what a powerful tool nonviolent struggle is when it comes toย achieving freedom, democracy and human rights."

Despite these official statements, critics ofย the group have labeled Canvas professional gun-for-hire revolution makers, who work onย commission toย actively stir upย political and social discontent inย countries, atย the request ofย international organizations that have their own vested interests.

The group, which is considered toย be a terrorist organization inย the UAE, has also been accused ofย collaborating and sharing information withย intelligence agencies inย the past, further raising questions aboutย Canvas' motives ofย their work inย Macedonia.

NGOs and the 'Fifth Column'

Canvas' actions inย Macedonia has also been coupled withย reports the group is teaming upย with non-government organizations (NGOs) inย the country, who are allegedly determined toย see the overthrow ofย Nikola Gruevski's government overย what has been seen asย a lack ofย cooperation byย not imposing sanctions onย Russia.

Among these groups is the 'Open Society Foundations,' which is one ofย the many NGOs set upย by controversial investor George Soros, while US government agency USAID also runs various programs inย Macedonia.

Soros' groups such asย Open Society Foundations have long been accused ofย representing and acting toย maintain western interests inย the countries inย which they operate, and have been inย operation inย Macedonia forย close toย two decades, working withย a range of "civil society organizations."

Other criticisms are that these groups take away the sovereignty ofย certain governments byย pushing a certain agenda onย the general population, withย Open Society Foundations' Macedonian program focusing on "preventing backsliding inย the country's efforts toย join the European Unionโ€ฆ"

These alleged attempts toย influence Macedonian politics are not new according toย investigative journalist Umberto Pascali, who has reported widely onย the impacts and influence onย NGOs inย Balkan countries.

Pascali said efforts byย Soros' groups toย destabilize governments represented the concept ofย the 'Fifth Column'ย โ€” whereby groups attempt toย undermine a government fromย within the countryย โ€” arguing that similar efforts forย a "soft coup de'tat" had taken place byย Western backers inย the country before.

Serving Geopolitical Interests?

The alleged links betweenย Canvas and NGOs such asย the Open Society Foundation's Macedonia program has raised questions overย the how much external influence has had an impact onย the recent protests inย the country, withย tens ofย thousands turning outย over the weekend toย demonstrate againstย leader Nikola Gruevski's government.

Some, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have suggested the political discontent is being stoked asย part ofย a wider geopolitical game, aimed atย destabilizing the country, and subsequently scuppering any plans forย Russia's Turkish stream gas line toย pass throughย Macedonia.

"There are attempts toย pressure Gruevski's government forย refusing toย join inย on sanctions againstย Russia and forย backing the Turkish Stream [gas] pipeline [construction]," he said.

The Macedonian events are quite brutal and are being orchestrated fromย outside.

Meanwhile, Skopje-based political analyst Vladimir Pandovski agreed withย Mr Lavrov that significant outsideย interests are atย play, and that the recent actions may not necessarily be serving the best interests ofย the Maceodnian people.

"Everything that is happening inย Macedonia has been scripted and staged. We've seen this before; it's a mix ofย comedy and tragedy," he told Sputnik.ย

Everyone is aware that this is an attempt toย create a new Maidan, likeย in Ukraine.
