ย  ย Slice and Dice:ย

NATO Planning to Destroy Russia Since 1949

NATO, an alliance established to counter the Soviet "threat," has been seeking Russia's destruction since 1949; surprisingly, the Alliance continues to encircle the Russian Federation after the collapse of the Soviet Union and dissolution of the Warsaw Treaty Organization.

NATO seeks Russia's destabilization hoping toย slice it up, Gary Leupp, a Professor ofย History atย Tufts University states, questioning whether it is actually the Alliance which poses the real threat toย the world.

  • "The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed inย April 4, 1949, initially consisting ofย the US, Canada, UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Portugal, asย a military alliance againstย the Soviet Union, and principally the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic," Professor Leupp narrates inย his article forย Counterpunch.com.

The US academic draws attention toย the fact that it was the USSR who dealt the fatal blow toย Nazi Germany just four years beforeย the establishment ofย the anti-Soviet Western military alliance.

He emphasizes that the Soviet Union "had contributed disproportionately" toย the defeat ofย Nazism: the Second World War claimed the lives ofย eight million Soviet military servicemen and 12 million civilians. For comparison's sake the United States casualties amounted toย around 186,000 inย the European theatre and 106,000 inย the Pacific.

However, Washington rushed toย establish an alliance aimed againstย its wartime ally, the USSR.

The US and Britain expressed their concerns aboutย the "geopolitical advances" ofย the Soviet Union, exhausted and devastated duringย the WWII.

  • "British Prime Minister Churchill while visiting the US [in 1946] alluded toย an 'iron curtain' falling acrossย Europe," the professor notes, adding sarcastically that the same expression was used just thirteen months earlier byย infamous Nazi minister ofย propaganda Joseph Goebbels.

NATO continued its expansion, joining Greece and Turkey inย 1952 and the Federal Republic ofย Germany inย 1955. And only then, inย 1956 the USSR formed the Warsaw Treaty Organization bringing together eight nations (to NATO's 15): the USSR, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Albania.

Interestingly enough, the Warsaw Treaty Organization byย no means could boast the military activity comparable toย that ofย NATO.

  • "Between 1945 and 1991 (when the Warsaw Pact and the USSRย  both dissolved themselves), the US had engaged inย three major wars (in Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf); invaded Grenada and Panama; and intervened militarily inย Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Lebanon, Cuba, Cambodia, Laos, Nicaragua, Haiti and other countries," the American academic underscores.ย

Furthermore, the USSR traditionally supported secular and socialist regimes, while the US had no scruples aboutย arming and training radical Islamist thugs inย Afghanistan inย the 1970s-80s.

Jimmy Carter's National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski urged then US president toย help the Afghani Mujahedeen ("those engaged inย jihad") toย oust Mohammad Najibullah and make the Soviets "bleed."

"The anti-Soviet jihadis were welcomed toย the White House byย President Ronald Reagan duringย a visit inย 1985. Reagan, perhaps already showing the signs ofย Alzheimer's disease, trumpeted them as 'the moral equivalent ofย America's founding fathers'," the professor continues.

However, jihadists' highly praised moral sense had not prevented them fromย dragging Afghanistan intoย an abyss ofย endless bloodbath, and killing Najibullah withย an exceptional brutality.

After the collapse ofย the Soviet Union inย 1991 and dismantling ofย the Warsaw Pact, NATO continued toย grow, absorbing former Soviet satellites. The Alliance was steadily expanding its sphere ofย influence creeping upย to Russia's borders.

Leupp quotes George Kennan, the famous US diplomat, who said inย a response toย Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia's joining NATO inย 1998:

  • "I think it is a tragic mistake. There was no reason forย this whatsoeverโ€ฆ It shows so little understanding ofย Russian history and Soviet history. Of course there is going toย be a bad reaction fromย Russia, and then [the NATO expansion advocates] will say that we always told you that is how the Russians areย โ€” butย this is just wrong."

However, NATO continued its triumphant march, taking overย the Baltic statesย โ€” former Soviet Republicsย โ€” and announcing that it would welcome Ukraine and Georgia's decision toย become the Alliance's members.

The post-Cold War period has been marked byย serious geopolitical tensions, Western unilateral invasions, color revolutions and civil wars, inย contrast toย Cold Warย โ€” a period ofย relative stability inย the world.

The irony ofย the situation is that it was Russia, not NATO who has been ultimately labeled asย an "existential threat" toย peace.

"These are wild, stupid words coming fromย highly placed figures. Isn't it obvious that Russia is the one being surrounded, pressured and threatened? That its military budget is a fraction ofย the US's, its global military presence miniscule inย relation toย the US footprint?" the professor points out.

It is begging the question why the US and NATO persist inย encircling Russia.

  • "What do you do afterย you complete the Western encirclement ofย Russia?" the American academic asks and adds: "Why, you destabilize the country itself, hoping toย slice it up!"

It is all aboutย partitioning Russia, a vast territory rich withย natural resources.

"If Russia is an existential threat, its own existence is a threat, right? So why not cut it up?" Leupp continues, posing yet another question, whether NATO itself is the real threat toย the world's peace and stability.

"Shouldn't we welcome resistance toย further expansion, complaints aboutย US arm-twisting, and calls forย cooperation withย Russia rather thanย confrontation and destruction?" the American professor asks.
